Have you heard of Groupon yet?

Very interesting concept! I love that it has a lot of cities- sometimes it's hard to be a frugal blogger because I only know my own region well. Groupon is in most major cities and it's free to sign up! Here's a short video that explains it better than I can:

Walgreens $5 Challange: The Not Quite Edition

Deal One:
We used the Walgreens coupon that made these soups $1.25 each.
Next, we added the 1.10 off 3 coupon that I printed awhile back. (Go here for various printable coupons that save me tons of money!)
Then we added a .25 off one can coupon from a newspaper insert.
Finally, we used a $2 Register Reward from last week's deals.

TOTAL: $1.97 (including tax.)

Deal 2:
Tylenol Cold and Zyrtec (which I use every day, all year long!) The turtle was an extra for my husband, who was assisting me today! :)

The Tylenol was on sale for $4.99
The Zyrtec was on sale for 18.99
I used this $2 off Zyrtec coupon
and this $2 off Tylenol coupon.
We got a $10 register reward back for buying $20 worth of selected products.

Total: $23.29, but we got a $10 RR back , which we used on our third transaction.

Deal 3:

The soup was on sale for $1.25, and I used another $1.10 off 3 Progresso soup coupon.
The cakes were on sale for .99 cents each, and I used two .75 cents off 2 coupons, cut from previous purchases.
The evaporated milk and chocolate chips were on sale, and I had newspaper coupons for both.
The two Reeses were filler items.
I also used my $10 off Register Reward from the second transaction.

Total: $1.65

Total OOP today: $26.91, which means I did not make the $5 challenge at all. This was not my best day at Walgreens by any means, but I got a lot of items that we like to have on hand for the winter (like the soup!) and expensive things that we use anyway, like the Zyrtec. All in all, it came out to $1.34 an item, which is not so bad. :)

Christmas Giving on a tiny budget

We've tasked ourselves with spending as little as possible this Christmas while still giving awesome gifts!

This is something we've been planning all year, but it's not too late to start. Here's some of the things we've done:

1. Stockpiled yard sale/thrift store/consignment gifts. Most are new in the box, but for a much better price than the store.

2. I've been using my Paperback Swap credits to get books for friends and family that I know they'll love. I put anything that they don't have on my wish list, and have gotten several books that way. If you're a reader, join now!

3. E-bates. We do not like to shop, so we do as much as possible online. When we order something we need, we pop over to Ebates to see if the store is listed. We've saved shipping costs AND gotten cash back on many purchases- the cash back will help pay for our Christmas. If we're going to get it anyway, we may as well earn money on it!

4. Swagbucks. I earn Amazon gift cards using Swagbuck searches. A $5 gift card is 45 Swagbucks, and I can earn that in a month doing basic searches. If you have a blog or a lot of friends, you can earn even more through their affiliate program. Sign up now and get 3 free Swagbucks! We have a bunch of Amazon gift certificates waiting for our Christmas order!

5. We watch for deals like this. The $40 gift card will go to sending flowers to a hostess who is having us for Thanksgiving. A gracious, beautiful gift...free! (Hurry- it expires 11/30/09). This is only one example of how points can earn rewards that can turn into gifts. I watch frugality blogs and freebie blogs to find things like this.

$5 Walgreens Challange

Since I started doing Walgreens deals, I've rarely had to buy shampoo, soap, toothpaste, makeup, and hair care supplies.

Here's how I turned this:

For the low, low price of $1.50!

I had these printable tomato soup coupons (FireFox) (Internet Explorer) to match to the tomato soup sale. Cost: $0

I used a Herbal Essence newspaper buy one get one free coupon and the 3/$7 sale. $2 in Register Rewards came with this deal! Cost: $1.50 for two items, after coupons and RR.

I played the Recession Payback game to get a $1 of three Hunts Tomato Sauce coupon, which made the three cans of Hunt's FREE. Cost: $0

Super Savings Saturday: $45.61 at Dillons!

Not a huge haul, but we're extremely thankful for the laundry detergent and my favorite deodorant! The cheese will come in handy for the taco night we're having!

I saved $41.91 between coupons and sales. Weeeeeeee!

Coupon-a-Rama!

I get lots of questions about where I get all my coupons. Lately, I've gotten a ton of great coupons online! Here's a peak at a few of the things I've printed out in the past week or so. I hold on to them and combine them with sales for great deals!

Here's a $1 off Mission Tortilla coupon. I was able to print it twice! Watch for sales and you should be able to get free or nearly free tortillas.

I got Nature Valley Granola Bars and Nature Valley Nut Clusters coupons online. If you have a Kroger/Dillons in your area, you can combine the coupons with the General Mills 4 in one transaction deal to get these free or nearly free.

I always print out all the yogurt coupons I can find- they go on sale often AND are often on manager markdown, meaning I get yogurt a lot of yogurt for free or nearly free.

If you have a little one in diapers for get them for charities or baby shower gifts, you can find coupons in spades!

These are just a small sampling of what I've seen or personally used this week, and it adds up!

Are Coupons Worth the Time?

For me, an unequivocal YES! This week I spent about 25 minutes clipping and organizing my coupons and about an hour shopping.

I spent $22 for all you see here at Walgreens and Dillons. This is about $90 worth of groceries!



The Ted's Montana Grill contains my FREE lunch- go here if you have a Ted's nearby to get the same deal.

I used the Ziploc Bag Deal discussed here and the Nature Valley Clusters deal outlined here, which saved quite a bit. I also had two high value Zantac coupons, which I used for this. I then used my Walgreens Rewards to buy all that Cascade. (I have used homemade detergent before, but when I can get it, nothing beats Cascade!)

The rest of my items were bought using various coupons-from online, from the newspaper, from the packaging, from promotions mailed to me, etc. I'll do a coupon post someday! :) It works for me!

All You Magazine

I've heard a lot about the incredible coupons available in All You magazine, but I'd never personally subscribed until today. A neighbor mentioned that she had recently subscribed to it, so I decided to look it up and saw that it is currently on SALE at Amazon! Since I had some Swagbuck gift cards hanging around, I decided to give it a shot. I'll let you know how it goes!

Making Vacations a Bit Less Expensive

Are you going on vacation in the next few months in the United States? Consider ordering an Entertainment Book for the city you're visiting.

We buy one every year for our town after the prices drop, and we've always been happy with the museum buy one ticket get one free and half price restaurant meals. If you wait a few months after they come out, the prices drop dramatically.

I just bought one for next to nothing at this site (AND got a $5 bonus for signing up!) for a city that we're visiting in a few months. (Location and time to be announced after we return!) Hopefully it will be stuffed with buy one get one admissions to some of the places we hope to visit, saving us some of our hard earned vacation cash.

Finding Savings Online

I don't know where I'd be in my frugality journey if the internet did not exist. Being able to pop over to frugality blogs or find other savings online make getting a good deal (or at least spotting a bad one!) ridiculously easy!

I've been pretty good at hitting up Google when I order things online to attempt to find coupon codes. There are also some awesome coupon sites. I'm particularly impressed with this one, because it is fairly easy to use. Some of those sites are impossible, but Find Savings has categories for new coupons, expiring coupons, popular coupons, and a search. You can also look at specific store coupons, such as Target or Wal-Mart. There were free shipping offers, but this site also calls attention to things like clearance sales and free gifts with order. With the handy the search feature, it won't take very long to check to see if a deal that you're you're going to order online anyway can be made a little sweeter. All this without the hassle of going through pages of Google listings to make sure that you have found the most recent deal!

Since I do a large portion of my Christmas shopping online, I will be checking out coupon sites like this often. I also noticed that Clinique is among the stores listed- my sister no longer works for them, so my free Clinique days are over. It's good to know that there are places I can go to find potential deals on the products that I love.

Kohl's Gift Cards

Did you get a $10 Kohl's gift card in the mail? I know that Anne Marie at Married to the Empire did, because her picture reminded me to dig out mine! I got nearly $66 worth of merchandise for $1.34 out of pocket by combining the card and Kohl's mega sales that are going on right now.



The skirt was $4.90, marked down from $50! Add heels, pantyhose and a jacket and I can wear it to work, or a more casual top and shoes, and it's everyday wear. I love basic pieces.

The oven mitts have been sorely needed for longer than I want to admit. We've had the same two since, er...college, and they are ratty and falling apart. These new ones will go with my yellow kitchen. They were about $2.50 each, marked down from $8 each.

$10 dollars did not seem like a lot when I saw the gift card, but combined with sales, it really went a long way.

Super Savings Saturday

I had an excellent week at Dillons! I found some incredible manager markdowns. Go here for the scoop on loading coupons to your store cards!

• 2 Olay Ribbons Bodywashes (used a newspaper coupon and loaded a coupon onto my Dillon's card, AND combined with a sale! Score!)
• Zest Soap 8 pack (Same as above- wow!)
• Wisk Laundry Soap (sale, coupon, online coupon)
• Horizon Organic Cheddar Cheese (Manager about to expire markdown- .29 cents each. One of my best markdown finds EVER!)
• Fresh Express Salad in a bag (manager markdown .29 cents.)
